"The Benefits of Intentional Life Design: Prioritization and Well-Being Outcomes" Authors: M. A. J. Creswell, S. M. Grant Journal: Journal of Positive Psychology, 2020 Abstract Overview: This study explores the impact of intentional life design—where individuals categorize their tasks based on priorities, focusing on what is most important during different periods of their lives—on overall well-being and stress reduction. By comparing groups that used "life menu" methods to control groups that did not prioritize tasks in a structured manner, the study found that individuals who adopted a structured framework (similar to identifying essentials, supporting tasks, and joys) reported significantly higher satisfaction and lower stress. The "menu approach" helped participants feel empowered to select tasks based on current relevance and energy levels, thus improving clarity and intentionality. Key Findings: Increased Life Satisfaction: Participants who categorized their tasks (essentials, supporting tasks, and personal joys) showed a 28% increase in life satisfaction scores. Stress Reduction: Those using a structured prioritization system reported lower stress levels, as they felt less overwhelmed by competing demands. Greater Intentionality: The process of defining core priorities helped participants stay focused on their values, enhancing personal fulfillment and goal achievement. The approach of categorizing life commitments into "entrées" (essentials), "appetizers" (supporting tasks), and "desserts" (personal joys) closely mirrors the intentional life design studied in Creswell and Grant's research. The study supports the idea that such categorization brings about greater balance, allowing individuals to be more deliberate in their choices, thereby enhancing well-being. By designing your life menu with intentionality—focusing on the most important aspects while allowing flexibility for smaller tasks and personal joys—you're more likely to create a balanced, fulfilling routine that aligns with your values and promotes overall well-being. 😊

5 things I learned at the ICF Midwest Coaches Conference this year.... ✔️ Speaking of difficulty, Amy Climer, Ph.D., CSP showed me that when we have a challenge that is high, but we don’t yet have the skill to meet the challenge, we feel anxiety. When we’re gaining the skill to meet the challenge, we can move from anxiety to excitement, and when we have both high challenges and high skills we feel flow. The analogy I have for this is when I shoot archery. Each arrow in the 1,2,3 or 4 ring help me learn how to adjust to hit the bullseye. It takes time, practice, and adjustment in a combination that allows you to reach flow. So give yourself the time to gain the skill to meet the challenges and embrace the discomfort. According to keynote Bridgette Simmonds PCC, CPC, ELI-MP that's what it means to be BOLD! ✔️ When we create a task list (my project management super power!) that becomes ever growing and requires reprioritizing all... the... time... it can create anxiety and take thought load. Instead, create a thought load list that is for the future. Then pull from it when you feel you can. ✔️ Complete regular energy audits. What raises your energy? What drains it? Counterbalance your time and energy. Yes, we all have energy sucking activities, but we don’t have to be there 100% of the time. ✔️ Learn and embrace who’s in your constellation, and where you currently are within it. Set intention for where you want to move. ✔️ Liane Davey reminded us that conflict is a process, having a grievance is not. Her favorite quote resonated with me. “Resentment is a poison that you’re hoping another person will swallow” Nelson Mandela.  Conflict creates tension. If you avoid it you create conflict debt. BLURRED 🤑 LINES Navigating Complexities of Human Connection & How We Value Complex interplay between emotional and financial aspects of relationships, both personal and professional, involve bids for emotional connection, a concept popularized by The Gottman Institute. Bids are essentially discrete requests for attention, affirmation, or connection, and how they're received and responded to can significantly impact relationship dynamics. These bids are crucial for maintaining emotional intimacy and closeness. Emotional accounting refers to the subconscious tracking of bids as give-and-take in relationships. It's like an emotional ledger where people keep track of favors, gestures, and support given and received. When this emotional accounting becomes too transactional, it can strain relationships and diminish genuine connection. Platforms like LinkedIn, while valuable for professional networking, can inadvertently advance a transactional approach to relationships. This is where our balancing act comes in. While capitalism and financial successes are crucial, they mustn’t overshadow this most human aspect of relationships. Capitalism is trying though! Too human needs, especially those that are deeply emotional, existential, or spiritual, often seem so priceless, as if they cannot be met better through monetary transactions. But wait, there’s more: 1. LOVE & CONNECTION: While genuine emotional connections are essential and priceless, apps, therapy or coaching can effectively grease the skids toward more and deeper connection. 2. PURPOSE & MEANING: While the quest for meaning is intrinsic and deeply personal, logotherapy workshops or retreats can offer insights and perspectives that aid in finding purpose, facilitating the journey toward a more meaningful life. 3. IDENTITY & BELONGING: While self-understanding is invaluable, community programs or group activities can foster a sense of belonging, smoothing the path toward a stronger sense of identity within a community. 4. AUTONOMY & FREEDOM: While true freedom is innate, legal or advocacy services can help protect and promote individual freedoms, easing the process of exercising autonomy. 5. SELF-EXPRESSION & CREATIVITY: While creativity is a personal expression, classes or workshops can nurture and develop creative skills, amplifying expression through mediums. 6. PERSONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT: While growth is a personal journey, life coaching or educational courses can provide guidance and support. 7. PEACE OF MIND & INNER HARMONY: While inner peace is priceless, meditation classes or therapy can offer tools for achieving peace of mind, smoothing the path toward a more harmonious inner state. 8. SPIRITUALITY & TRANSCENDENCE: While spirituality is deeply personal, gurus or m religious practices can offer pathways to transcendence and connection to something greater, facilitating spiritual experiences and growth.
